How Do You Use a Ratchet Strap on a Lorry?

In this guide, we’re showcasing how to use lorry ratchet straps, including details on safety precautions, how to attach them, and storage best practices.

Usage and best practices for lorry ratchet straps

Check for signs of wear and tear

It’s important to inspect straps before use and check for any signs of damage or wear. This could include fraying edges or rust on the metal components.

Correct securing techniques

This will depend on the type of strap you’re using.

The type of strap you choose will also depend on the type of lorry you’re using to transport the cargo and how large or heavy the cargo is.

Lashing capacity and break force take into account the amount of weight a strap can support comfortably before it’s at risk of snapping or breaking.

That’s why you should always use a strap that supports the weight of the cargo it’s holding in place.

Once you have the correct strap for your specific use case, place the ratchet strap over the cargo.

To thread and tighten a ratchet strap for cargo on a lorry, follow these steps:

  • Lay out the strap with the handle pointing up.
  • Secure cargo by hooking the ends over the side of the truck bed or in grooves in the van wall.
  • Slide one end of the strap through the slot and back over the top.
  • Take up all the slack in the strap.
  • Hold the tail of the strap and start cranking the handle until it's tight.
  • Lock the handle in the closed position.
  • Distribute your load evenly and secure all sides of the cargo.
  • Be cautious not to over-tighten, as it could damage the strap or cargo.
  • Check for give by tugging at the strap; it should feel tight and secure with no slack.

Regular maintenance and storage tips

How you store your ratchet straps will play a part in their longevity and maintaining their condition. They should be kept clean and stored in a dry place.
